T-Shirt Printing Methods

There are several different methods of t-shirt printing, each with its own distinct advantages, disadvantages, possibilities and limitations. To work out which one is best to suit your requirements, it is important to have a fairly clear idea of what you want to have printed onto your t-shirts, and also consider what you are going to be using them for. The various methods of garment printing also come with their own price tags, with some being more economical for large runs of identically printed garments. Other methods allow for a small quantities of t-shirts printed with different text to be produced at an affordable cost.

For example, if you need a durable, long-lasting print that is resistant to wear & tear and fading over time, vinyl printing is ideal. If you need bigger quantity of t-shirts with identical printing for example for use in promotions,  screen printing may be a better option. Here are the methods explained in more detail…

Example of Vinyl t-shirt printingVinyl T-Shirt Printing

Our most popular solution for printing smaller quantities of t-shirts cost-effectively. It’s quick and easy to do, with minimal setup costs, and allows enough flexibility to be able to create stunning results.
Ideally used for designs where there is only a single colour to be printed (although more colours can be used), the design (usually text) is cut into sheets of coloured vinyl which is then heat pressed onto the clothing, giving a durable and vibrant finish.
Best for:

  • Stag & Hen Night t-shirts.
  • Small runs (20 items or less) with identical prints where are a maximum of 2 colours is being used.
  • Any order where each garment has a a unique print (for example the name of the individual wearer).

You can add photographs and small logos to vinyl printed t-shirts, by using full colour transfer printing, detailed below.

Full colour printed t-shirtFull Colour Transfers

These are A4 transfer sheets professionally printing using colour laser printing equipment. The advantage of using full colour transfers is that they allow you to add graphics, photographs, logos and other artwork to the finished design at a low cost. They are often popular with customers orders a run of t-shirts for a group night out (for example a stag night) where the design includes a funny photograph.

On the downside, this method of printing isn’t the most durable. Not a problem if the t-shirts are only going to be worn & washed a few times, but perhaps not the best option for corporate work wear which is going to be used heavily over a long period of time.  For durable full colour garment printing it’s best to use full colour vinyl, which is a very cost-effective solution.

Another important thing to bear in mind with full colour t-shirt transfer printing is the fact that the maximum printable area is about A4 size (approx 20cm x 28xm). There are 2 types of transfer. The first is “light transfers” which are used for printing onto light coloured garments (white, cream). The second is opaque, which are white in colour and are suited to printing onto black and coloured clothing.

Awesome screen printed t-shirtsScreen Printing

Professional, long-lasting and inexpensive – screen printing is absolutely ideal when you need a large quantity (20 garments or more) of items printed with same print on each. There is an initial setup cost involved because of the cost of setting up screens, but once your screens are made you can re-order and only pay the price of the t-shirts and printing itself. If you need a large amount of t-shirts printed for an event, or for your band to sell at gigs, this is the one to go for. To keep the price down it’s best to use as few colours in your design as possible, if you choose screen printing. This is because a separate screen has to be made for each colour in the artwork, and also the pricing is calculated based on the number of colours to be printed onto each garment.

Although this method is more expensive initially,  the results are very long lasting and always look great – which means you don’t have to keep on replacing your t-shirts every few months. It’s the perfect way of embellishing clothing with a logo that needs to stay looking new for a long time. For example, race wear, work wear, and clothing for long-term promotions (although screen printing is also great for this when you need large quantities).

Full colour vinyl is as durable as our normal t-shirt vinyl, but it’s printed onto using solvent inks which give a clear and long-lasting resulting finish.
